Content and links get most of the attention in SEO, but a technical foundation problem can quietly cap your rankings no matter how good your content is. Here’s the checklist I run on every project before touching content strategy.
Crawling & indexing
- XML sitemap submitted in Search Console
- robots.txt not blocking important pages
- No orphaned pages with zero internal links
- Mobile usability passing in Search Console
Security & structure
- HTTPS enabled sitewide, no mixed-content warnings
- Canonical tags set correctly on every page
- Site architecture keeps important pages within three clicks of the homepage
- No unnecessary redirect chains
Content quality signals
- No duplicate content across pages
- Structured data validating without errors
- Broken links and 404s resolved
- Page speed checked on both mobile and desktop
The bottom line
Most small business sites have at least five or six of these issues quietly capping their rankings — often without the owner ever knowing. A technical audit is usually the highest-leverage hour you can spend on an underperforming site.
